In the Athens, they had an democracy, meaning all citizens can vote including women and slaves. Men worked in the morning and then exercised or attended meetings of the assembly. In the evenving upper class men would enjoyed all ale gatherings where they drank, dined, and discussed politics.
Family & Daily Life
The Athens boys were educated in singing, sports, and athmetic. Boys had more educational oppourtunies than girls -- Learning math, reading, and playing music.
For women, life revolved around the home and family. Girls married at 14 or 15 years old and were expected to have children and take care of household duties. Girls stayed at home and help their mothers around the house. Athenian girls were taught weaving, spinning and household duties. Although women could not attend school, some still learned to read and play music.
Women rarely went out, and if they did, they could only leave the house if a male relative went with them. Still, even educated women were not considered the equals of men. No political rights, could not own property.
Pericles
Pericles was the general who guided Thens for more than 30 years, from 461 B.C. to 429 B.C., shortly before his death. He helped Athens dominate force- treated other city-states like his subjects and demanded strict loyalty and steady payments for them. He also made them use Athenian money.
While treating other city-states like subjects who owed him money, he made society more democratic at home in Athens.He believed that peoples talents were more important then their social standing.
Pericles included more Athenians than ever before in the government - lower class male citizens can now run for office. He also paid officeholders. Even poor people hand a hand in government.
Age of Pericles also called "The Golden Ages" of Greece. Lots of creativity and learning was under his rule. Much of Greek cities destroyed by persian wars, so Pericles starts a major rebuilding program.
Farming & Trade
Many Athenians depended on farming for a living. Some raised sheep and goats for wool, milk and cheese. Others grew grapes and olives to make wine and olive oil to sell aboard. Not enough farmland to grow crops for all people. So, they had to import grain from other places. Athens becomes trading center of the Greek World. Merchants and artisans grow wealthy by making and selling property, jewelry, leather goods and other products.
